Emergency services respond to underground explosion in Stalybridge

EMERGENCY crews remain at the scene of an incident in Stalybridge after reports of two loud explosions in Millbrook.

Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) and police officers were called to Huddersfield Road, near the junction with Grove Road, shortly after 6.40pm on Sunday, August 10, following reports of two ‘loud bangs’.

Witnesses in the area described hearing two “bangs” before a metal grid in the road was seen to lift clear of its frame.

Some residents have been left without power, while others have reported intermittent electricity cuts throughout the day.

Initial speculation from locals centred on a possible gas leak, but there have been no reports of evacuations. A cordon has been established at the scene, with a full road closure in place around the junction.

Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue have confirmed they are working with Electricity North West after an incident with an underground cable caused an explosion.

Electricity North West engineers are on site assessing the damage and working to restore supplies to affected homes.

Police have asked members of the public to avoid the area while emergency work continues.
