Father and son take on cycle challenge for COPD charity

A FATHER and son will be embarking on an epic bike ride to raise awareness and vital funds for a charity that “means everything” to their family.

Lee McNamara, 25, and his dad Wesley Coulding, 47, will be cycling from Glossop all the way to Amsterdam in September in aid of Karen’s Haven.

The Tameside-based charity was recently established by Wesley’s sister Emma Liston in memory of their mum Karen, to help support people living with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD).

Lee and Wesley have their wheels at the ready for an epic bike ride

Emma – who, like Wesley, lives in Tameside – told the Correspondent: “I decided to set up the charity after a long battle that our mum faced with COPD. Being present while she was deteriorating was soul destroying.

“Our mum passed away from COPD in February this year. I feel passionate about helping people who struggle with COPD and other life-limiting conditions.”

Wesley and Lee’s journey will span several days and hundreds of miles – which is not only a personal challenge but a tribute to the countless individuals affected by COPD.

“Wes is passionate about keeping our mum’s memory alive through action and heart,” explained Emma. “Known for his determination (and sense of humour!), he’s been training hard for this challenge and is riding with pride in her honour.

“Lee, the proud owner of McNabarbers in Glossop, is already showing incredible dedication and strength. As Karen’s grandson, this ride holds deep meaning for him – a way to honour his nan’s legacy while pushing himself beyond limits for a cause that means everything to our family.”

They will start pedalling on September 21, taking in plenty of sights along the way, before getting to the Dutch capital five days later.

As a recognition of their efforts and dedication, the pair will be presented with a cheque at the Lords and Ladies Charity Ball on October 11, where supporters of Karen’s Haven will come together to celebrate community spirit and generosity.

They are looking to raise £5,000 and donations can be made via their GoFundMe page here: https://www.gofundme.com/f/father-and-son-bike-ride-from-glossop-to-amsterdam
