Latest development in Ashton revival announced

THE MAN determined to revive Ashton-under-Lyne has announced his latest scheme.

For Andy Kleek, of Monopoly Properties and who reopened Chute Bar, hopes to transform the former Shubar site into one and two-bedroomed apartments, plus commercial space.

The building, on Old Street, has stood empty since the store closed in 2019.

But Mr Kleek – who is also setting up a business in what was Sorrento’s, on Stamford Street, in 2026 – has revealed his plans.

He said: “Another top class development by Monopoly Properties in Ashton-under-Lyne.

“This is the current Shubar site on Old Street in Ashton, which will be transformed into one and two bedroom apartments, with commercial offerings on the ground floor.”

The Shubar building has been subject of planning permission before after a proposal to demolish it and build a new block housing 49 flats was given the go ahead in 2021

However, nothing came of that – now Mr Kleek is looking to bring it back into use.
