Bakery students were on a roll at national competition

TAMESIDE College bakery students proved they’re a batch above the rest after walking away with a haul of prizes at a prestigious national competition.

Learners from the Ashton-based college recently enjoyed a ride to Alton Towers for the Alliance for Bakery Students and Trainees annual conference competition.

They spent two days at the event, which saw students from colleges, universities and training organisations from across the UK compete to demonstrate their skills.

Students celebrate with their awards

At a black-tie presentation dinner, students from Tameside were awarded five first places, five second places and six third places during the competition – including in the prestigious Presidents Cup and Founders Cup.

The competition is seen as an important part of students’ training during their studies, giving them the confidence and professional networks to develop their career.

The college’s bakery students came away with an impressive array of awards

One of the bakery apprentices, Sireen Hussain, said the conference has “opened my eyes” to the different career paths and roles in the baking industry.

Bakery teacher Stella Clarke described it as “an amazing experience for the students”, adding: “I am really proud that they have come away with so many prizes and this shows their hard work and the college’s position as a leading provider of bakery training.”
