Families urged to check MMR jabs amid measles rise

TAMESIDE residents are being encouraged to help prevent the spread of measles as the summer holidays loom large.

It comes as recent data shows a rise in measles across Greater Manchester.

The borough’s Public Health team are reminding families to check their MMR (measles, mumps and rubella) vaccinations are up to date.

This is particularly the case before travelling abroad, as measles outbreaks are also being seen overseas.

Measles is a highly contagious disease that can lead to serious complications, especially in young children, pregnant women, and people with weakened immune systems.

With the infection able to spread easily through coughs and sneezes, health officials are warning that just one case can lead to an outbreak in schools, nurseries and busy public places such as travel hubs.

The MMR vaccine is free and available through all GP practices, with two doses required to be fully immune.

Anyone who develops symptoms of measles – which include a high fever, sore red eyes, and a blotchy red-brown rash that usually starts on the face – is advised to stay at home for at least four days and contact their GP or NHS 111 for advice.

Councillor Taf Sharif, Tameside Council’s Executive Member for Population Health and Wellbeing, said: “We want everyone in Tameside to enjoy a safe and healthy summer.

“Measles is not just a childhood illness – it can cause serious complications for people of all ages, so please check your vaccination status and book your MMR if needed.”
