All change at Curzon – managers go and women’s team comes in

CURZON Ashton Women will join forces with the rest of the club and become an official part of its structure ahead of the new season.

Although the women’s team were already associated with Curzon, that only went as far as sharing a name.

The reshuffled senior setup at the club will see the men’s first team, women’s first team and the new men’s reserve side all operating under the same umbrella.

“Following a successful year last year, finishing on a high by winning the League Plate we aim to continue and build on that form this season,” said Curzon Women’s head coach Dean O’Brien.

“The integration of the senior teams is a massive step in the right direction and we are all excited about it.

“Preparations are now well underway for the new season and a number of changes have already been made, most notably the recent departure of our First Team Manager – of which we are currently in the process of recruiting.

“Away from the pitch, the club will now take full control of the team, and we will therefore have the resources and facilities needed to operate in line with the men’s first team.”

The integration will mean Curzon Ashton Women will play in the same kit, be included in any shirt sponsorship deals, and play their matches at the Tameside Stadium.

The move comes after a tumultuous week for the Nash in which both men’s first team player-manager, Craig Mahon, and his women’s team counterpart Danielle Young left for pastures new.

Irishman Mahon has replaced David Longwell as head coach at AFC Fylde, and will line-up against Curzon in the National League North after their relegation from the National League.

Mahon, 35, wrote an open letter to Curzon’s fans on his departure, before which he played more than 200 games for the club and managed his 100th match towards the end of last season.

“To everyone connected with Curzon Ashton Football Club,” he said. “The time has come for me to say goodbye — a decision that certainly hasn’t been easy.

“Since the moment I arrived, Curzon Ashton has felt like more than just a football club. It’s been a family, a home, and a place where I’ve been able to grow as a coach, a manager, and more importantly, as a person.

“I want to express my sincere gratitude to the club for the opportunity to lead this team. It’s been an incredible journey filled with unforgettable memories, challenges that have made us stronger, and moments of real pride on and off the pitch.

“To the supporters — thank you. Your backing, passion, and belief in what we were building together meant everything. Whether it was a big win, a tough night, your support was felt and appreciated more than you’ll ever know.

“To the players, staff, volunteers, and everyone behind the scenes — thank you for your trust, your efforts, and your commitment to the badge. We broke numerous club records over the last two season, we did it as one, and I will always be proud of the standards we set and the culture we created.

“Curzon Ashton will always hold a special place in my heart. I leave with lifelong friendships, a deep respect for the people at the club, and immense pride in what we’ve achieved together.

“I’ll be watching, cheering, and always wishing this club nothing but success.

“Thank you for everything.”
