INTREPID Nepalese mountain guide Phurba Sherpa has successfully completed the epic Everest Marathon to raise funds for Reuben’s Retreat.
Phurba first got introduced to Reuben’s Retreat when he led treks to Everest Base Camp for the charity in 2023 and 2024. He was so inspired by the group that he visited the Retreat, in Glossop in 2023 and was guest of honour at the charity’s flagship event, the annual REUBall.
Reuben’s Retreat was founded in August 2012 following the tragic passing of Reuben Michael Graham aged just 23 months. The charity supports families who have suffered the loss of a child or have a child living with medical complexities.
On May 29, Phurba ran the Everest Marathon to help raise much-needed funds for Reuben’s Retreat. The marathon is an annual international high-altitude adventure, celebrating the historic Everest ascent by Tenzing and Hillary in 1953. It is the highest marathon in the world, and after trekking to Everest Base Camp (5,364m), Phurba then ran 42km back to Namche Bazar (3,440m).
He completed the marathon in 5hr 52m. The trek back down from Everest Base Camp to Namche Bazaar usually takes two days.
Phurba was named Intrepid DMC Nepal Best Leader in 2023 and also won the Wanderlust Guide Award in 2023. He said: “This journey wasn’t about setting a world record – it’s all about my personal growth and experiencing the thrill of reaching the top of the world, while raising some much-needed funds for a wonderful charity which has touched my heart. When I first heard about Reuben’s Retreat two years ago, I knew I wanted to play a part in the support they give to families.”
Nicola Graham, Founder of Reuben’s Retreat and Reuben’s Mummy, said: “I just feel blown away that this wonderful man has taken our charity so close to his heart. What an achievement – the trek to base camp is huge, but then to run a 42km marathon back down – amazing. He’s a true inspiration with a heart of gold.”
The activity forms part of Reuben Retreat’s fundraising initiative ‘One in a Million.’ The charity is about to enter the final stage of its build phase and fundraising is focusing on building together to #CompleteTheRetreat.
