Talk in Hyde to explore local Titanic connections

IT’S been over 110 years since the Titanic struck an iceberg and sank in the Atlantic Ocean on its maiden voyage, killing over 1,500 people.

A fascinating talk is coming up in Hyde which will explore the people from Greater Manchester who had a connection to the British passenger liner.

It’s thought that up to 40 passengers and crew members who sailed on the RMS Titanic in April 1912 had direct links to the city region.

The talk will be hosted by the Hyde branch of the Royal National Lifeguard Institution (RNLI) – led by Lauren Jaye Gradwell, a branch fundraising volunteer and local historian.

Lauren began the project in 2020 during the Covid pandemic by researching the lives of the 40 individuals, with the aim of writing a book on the subject.

She will be explaining who these people were and will delve deeper into certain individual’s lives, bringing their stories to life. Some died on the ship, while others survived.

There will be the opportunity for attendees to ask questions too.

The talk entitled Greater Manchester’s Titanic People is on Saturday, June 7, from 2pm to 4pm at Zion Congregational Church on Peel Street in Hyde (postcode SK14 5PE).

Tickets are £5 – which includes a cream tea – and can be bought by contacting Ian on 07762 745624. Raffle tickets will also be available to buy.

All funds raised will go to the RNLI – which provides a 24-hour rescue service in the UK and Ireland at sea, as well as beach patrols and education.
