Beacon lit in Droylsden to mark 80 years since VE Day

LOCAL Scouts illuminated commemorations for the 80th anniversary of VE Day in Droylsden.

North Tameside District Scouts, veterans, civic leaders and community members joined forces to light a beacon.

Last Thursday (May 8) saw the country reflect on a significant milestone in our history, honouring the heroes of the Second World War decades on from victory being declared in Europe.

The tribute to those who served in the conflict took place at the 413th Manchester Headquarters, in the historic Moravian Settlement.

Among the guests were members of the Royal British Legion, including veterans Peter and Vera, and Dan from SSAFA – the Armed Forces charity.

Dan served in both the Merchant and Royal Navy, Peter in the Medical Corps, and Vera in the Queen Alexandra’s Royal Army Nursing Corps.

Peter addressed the young attendees with a poignant reminder: “But for the veterans, we would not have the world we have now.”

Hyde Newton councillor Hugh Roderick – Tameside Council’s executive member for finance and resources – also joined the commemoration and praised the young people’s involvement.

He said: “It was good to see so many young people commemorating the end of the war in Europe, appreciating what the forces had done in the past so they could have a safe future.”

Andrew Morton, a lead volunteer for North Tameside District Scouts, described the event as “a fantastic night” and extended thanks to everyone who attended, giving special mention to the 413th Manchester group for hosting the evening and providing refreshments.

Anyone interested in joining the Scouts – whether as a young person, leader or supporter – is encouraged to get involved.
