Arrests made after police investigate suspected abduction in Hyde

POLICE have confirmed arrests were made after armed officers raided a house in Hyde.

Greater Manchester Police has issued a statement after being called out to an incident.

At around 7.40pm on Sunday evening (May 4), police say they received a report about the potential abduction of a man in Hyde.

They added that an “intensive” investigation was launched to “establish the full circumstances and facts of the incident”.

A man was arrested on suspicion of abduction, which was followed by armed officers executing a warrant on Meadowfield Court in the town on Bank Holiday Monday night (May 5).

Police said on Tuesday (May 6) that, following an investigation, they now believe that no abduction took place and there is no wider threat to the public.

A man has since been arrested on suspicion of perverting the course of justice and enquiries are ongoing.

It comes as two men were arrested at an address in Farnworth, in Bolton, on suspicion of wasting police time and later bailed pending further enquiries in a separate incident. This followed a call to the emergency services which led to an armed police response, which was later stood down after no threat was identified.

Police say the incidents are not connected to an ongoing counter terrorism operation, which involved raids being carried out across Greater Manchester over the weekend.

The force is urging people to be mindful of making “inappropriate calls” to emergency services.

Assistant Chief Constable Steph Parker said: “These calls put an unnecessary strain on our resources, at a time when serious work was ongoing across the force.

“Ultimately, for both of these cases, these specialist resources were thankfully not required for the situation.

“While we take all calls incredibly seriously and will respond to them – as we did in these two instances – we will always take the appropriate steps where these calls are not suspected to be genuine.

“Protecting the public is our number one priority and we won’t hesitate to make arrests or secure charges when we suspect people are interfering with that.”
