New digital skills sessions brew up opportunities at Waterloo Park

TAMESIDE residents seeking to enhance their digital skills can now benefit from free training sessions at the Waterloo Park Centre, courtesy of the Friends of Waterloo Park.

Building on their popular ‘Tea and Toast’ social gatherings, the volunteer-led group is launching a series of classes aimed at tackling digital exclusion in the community.

Lee Staniforth, the group’s secretary with three decades of IT experience, recognized the need for structured digital support after frequently assisting attendees with tech-related queries during social events.

Securing funding from Tameside Council and the Greater Manchester Combined Authority’s ‘Strengthening Communities Digital Inclusion’ fund, the initiative aims to empower residents with essential digital competencies.

“Many services have moved online, from banking to accessing government support. Our goal is to help people feel more confident navigating the digital world in a supportive environment.”

Starting in May, the hour-long sessions will cover basics such as email usage, internet browsing, online safety, photo printing, and e-commerce. Additionally, drop-in sessions will be available for individuals seeking assistance with personal devices.

The Friends of Waterloo Park continue to encourage community engagement through various activities, including toddler groups, gardening clubs, and seasonal events.
