Bronze medallist athlete dazzles at Tameside primary school

PUPILS at one Tameside primary school have seen how the fast route can lead to glory after a visit from a local medal-winning sprinter.

Andy Robertson won bronze at athletics’ recent European Championships in the 60 metres sprint.

And he was back in Dukinfield to talk to pupils at Broadbent Fold about his experiences.

Andy Robertson won bronze at athletics’ recent European Championships in the 60 metres sprint.

Pupils at the Tennyson Avenue school followed Andy’s progress after he was called up a reserve and he shared his messages about not giving up on your dreams.

They also keenly watched a replay of his run on a bug screen.

Children also heard about his trip to China for the World Championships and how the path to the international stage started just down the road, as an eight-year-old at East Cheshire Harriers.

Everyone, including staff, also got to see the medal he earned by running 60 metres in just 6.55 seconds as well as hear about the 34-year-old’s plans for the summer.

Broadbent Fold’s headteacher Catherine Parker said: “We are extremely grateful of Andy’s time and his message to the children was to not give up on your dreams no matter how hard it is, or how old you get.

“He has also written this on a poster, which is up in the key stage two corridor for all the children to remember.

“I thought this was a lovely idea – so they can be reminded of his message each day.”
