Traffic fears over Audenshaw supermarket proposal

A SUPERMARKET giant has sparked concern with its proposal to open a store in Audenshaw.

Lidl has contacted residents detailing its hopes of placing a branch at the site of The Pearl restaurant in 2029.

But The Correspondent has heard of concerns over getting to and from the area, which lies next to the busy Trough junction.

Even though it will be more than four years before any work can even start as the current occupiers’ lease does not end until then, worries over traffic impact are already being voiced.

As things stand, the only entrance and exit to the site is from a turning close to traffic lights – and under preliminary drawings from Lidl, no other access point is proposed.

And with 91 customer parking spaces planned as the current building will be demolished and replaced with one running alongside the neighbouring Ashton Canal, it is likely more traffic will use the junction.

Lidl, who say their scheme will create ‘about 40 jobs for local people,’ will hold a consultation event at nearby Aldwinians Rugby Club on Wednesday, April 9 from 3pm until 7pm.

It plans to submit an outline planning application to Tameside Council for site access, landscaping and layout.

If that is approved, a more detailed application will then be lodged but it already says that of the 91 parking spaces, six will be accessible, nine will be for parents and children and two will have electric vehicle chargers.

The firm also states it will increase tree coverage and landscaping on the site and an existing drainage culvert will be redirected.

However, how traffic using the facility will be managed is likely to be the key issue.
