Motorists warned to expect delays due to M67 weekend closure

MOTORISTS are being warned of a final weekend closure of the M67 as part of work to replace a motorway bridge.

The ageing St Anne’s Road bridge in Denton is currently being replaced due to long-term safety concerns.

The £23 million project led by National Highways started in January 2023 and is expected to take three years.

The government company responsible for the country’s motorways and main A roads has been working with partners Tilbury Douglas to deliver the bridge.

The motorway will be closed in both directions between Junction 1a at Denton and Junction 3 in Hyde from 9pm on Friday, April 4, until 5am on Monday, April 7.

During the weekend, eight steel beams weighing over 250 tonnes in total will be installed by being carefully lowered into position.

The beams will support the new bridge deck, on which vehicles run, which will be built during the next phase of the project.

The motorway closure is likely to lead to local roads being busier and will impact supporters travelling to the Manchester derby between United and City at Old Trafford on Sunday.

“It is imperative we keep the travelling public and our workforce safe,” said Mangat Bansal, National Highways’ Programme Delivery Manager.

“To achieve this, we need to close the motorway for the weekend to allow for the heavy machinery needed to undertake this work to be brought in.

“We always strive to minimise disruption although, regretfully, delays to journeys are expected. We therefore advise everyone to plan before they travel and allow extra time. We apologise for any inconvenience this work will cause and thank people for their support and patience while we continue our work.”

Signed diversions will be in place and more information can be found at https://nationalhighways.co.uk/our-roads/north-west/m67-st-anne-s-road-bridge-replacement-project/
