Great-great-grandmother, 105, shares her secret to long life

MARJORIE Rigby was born just weeks after the end of the First World War in 1919.

Despite her remarkable age, the great-great-grandmother from Dukinfield has lost none of her zest for life.

She celebrated her 105th birthday with a glass of Baileys Irish Cream and said she was looking forward to reaching 110 years old!

Marjorie put the secret of longevity down to keeping her mind and body active, relying on common sense, and taking a tot of whisky every day!

Marjorie with her family, Civic Mayor and Consort

She was invited to Dukinfield Town Hall recently for a special celebration by the Civic Mayor of Tameside, Councillor Betty Affleck, and her Consort, Declan Fitzpatrick.

In the mayor’s parlour, Marjorie was accompanied by her daughter Angela and other family members.

She married her husband Charlie in May 1945 – the same month as VE Day – and the couple were together for 59 years. They had five grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter.

During the Second World War, Marjorie served as a plotter in the Women’s Auxiliary Air Force (WAAF) and received a birthday card from the Royal Air Force (RAF), which she has proudly displayed next to one from the King and Queen.

“Marjorie is a remarkable lady who has lived her long life to the full and still has a twinkle in her eye even though she is 105,” said the Civic Mayor, Cllr Affleck.

“It is incredible when you think about the changes she has encountered. When she was born, George V was on the throne, women had only just achieved the right to vote, and radio and cinema were in their infancy with television and computers many years in the future.

“Declan and I thoroughly enjoyed our time with Marjorie. It was an honour to meet her.”
