New Tameside Council cabinet member appointed after councillor steps down in WhatsApp furore

TAMESIDE Council has moved quickly to replace one of the councillors who stepped down from a cabinet role amid the Andrew Gwynne WhatsApp furore.

Cllr Jack Naylor backed away from his position as executive member for finance and resources as the Labour Party launched an investigation into comments in the group Trigger Me Timbers.

But just hours later, one of the more powerful positions in the authority has already been filled.

For Hyde Newton Councillor Hugh Roderick – assistant executive member for armed forces and culture – has agreed to step in.

Cllr Naylor was joined by Denton South ward colleagues George Newton and Claire Reid in stepping down from their executive roles after the investigation was launched.

So far, no replacements have been found for the former – executive member for strategic improvement and corporate vision – or the latter, assistant executive member for communications and corporate vision.

However, it is thought leader Cllr Eleanor Wills is searching for new people to come in.
