Civic Mayor’s Charity Ball to have Irish theme

A TOUCH of the Emerald Isle is on its way to Tameside.

Just a couple of days before St Patrick’s Day, the Civic Mayor’s Charity Ball promises to provide a “real ceilidh vibe”.

Although Councillor Betty Affleck has spent most of her life in Hyde, she was born in Dublin and wants to celebrate her chosen charities using the music, dance and traditions of her birthplace.

The retired catering manager, who has represented the Godley ward on Tameside Council since 2015, says there will be “good food, good entertainment and good craic”.

Cllr Affleck, who is the 49th person to wear the mayor’s chain, added: “If anyone can rival the Irish for having a great night, it’s the people of Tameside. They’re both warm, welcoming and love a good time.

“I hope we can pack the Jubilee Hall because I’m sure it’s going to be a wonderful night. We’re going to support some very good causes that are very close to my heart and which do such a vital job within the community.”

The Ball is taking place at Dukinfield Town Hall on Saturday, March 15 – for which the dress code will be black tie or evening dress.

The evening will begin with a drinks reception at 6.30pm, followed by a formal three-course dinner at 7pm.

Tickets are £50 and there will be a raffle and a charity auction. They can be bought by calling 0161 342 3087 or emailing mayorsoffice@tameside.gov.uk

During her mayoral year, Cllr Affleck is raising money for the Friends of Tameside Young Carers; The Shed, which works with men who would otherwise be isolated; and the East Manchester Community Boat Project, based at Portland Basin in Ashton-under-Lyne.
