New body for families of Tameside children with SEND

FAMILIES of children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) in Tameside are set to get a new support network.

The Tameside Umbrella Parent Carer Forum is being launched in January as the council assesses and develops its children’s services department and offering.

And to kickstart its action, a free event is taking place on Friday, January 10 at Dukinfield Town Hall, with two sessions running from 11am until 2pm and 4pm until 7pm.

It will give parents and carers the chance to meet the newly formed steering group, provide an opportunity for peer support and hear how the new body can make a real difference.

Representatives from the national charity Contact will also share insights into the work of other parent carer forums.

Local SEND services will be on hand to discuss their support for families in Tameside.

Tameside Council’s executive member for children and families, Councillor Teresa Smith, said: “The launch of the Tameside Umbrella Parent Carer Forum is a fantastic opportunity for local families to be at the forefront of influencing SEND services across the borough.

“I hope as many as possible can attend the event and find out more.

“The Forum is run by parents and carers, for parents and carers and I’m looking forward to working closely with them for the benefit of our young people.”

To attend the launch event, register via the Eventbrite website for the first session or the second session.
