A POPULAR cafe in an Ashton-under-Lyne park will be closed until next year because of a volunteer shortage.
The Georgie Porgies cafe in King George the Fifth Playing Fields usually serves visitors with drinks and snacks.
However, the park’s friends group – established in 2012 to help make the park a better place for local residents – pulled down the shutters last weekend due to low visitor numbers and a lack of people to staff the weekends and school holidays.
Chairman Alan Fish has vowed that it will re-open in 2025.
“We will open again next year – we just need some more volunteers to join our group for next year,” he told the Correspondent.
“We can also get volunteers a Level 2 in Catering so they can help us out in the cafe.”
Other areas of the park, off Alexandra Road, will still be active over the winter months.
Alan added: “Our Horticultural, Maintenance and Bee teams will still be meeting occasionally.
“The Management Christmas meeting is on December 4 at 7pm. Call in and find out how you could help to make King Georges a better place.
“The Rubbish Pool Club will be meeting at the earlier time of 5pm on Tuesday, December 10, to litter pick and play pool.”
