A COMMUNITY-FOCUSED theatre is celebrating receiving the highest award that a voluntary group can receive in the UK.
Hyde Little Theatre says it is “absolutely delighted” to be awarded the King’s Award for Voluntary Service – the equivalent to an MBE.
The not-for-profit group has been working in the Hyde community since 1967 and bought its Studio 9 home on Market Street in 1987.
It’s one of eight Tameside groups announced on His Majesty King Charles’s birthday this year as recipients of the prestigious award – along with Ashton United in the Community, Hattersley Health Champions, Dipak Dristri, Smallshaw Tenants and Residents, St Gabriel’s Community Group, Neonatal Knitters, and Diversity Matters North West.
The award recognises outstanding work by local volunteer groups to support their communities. It was created in 2002 to celebrate Her Majesty the late Queen’s Golden Jubilee and has continued ever since, including after the accession of His Majesty The King.
Representatives of Hyde Little Theatre will soon receive the award crystal and certificate from Diane Hawkins, Lord-Lieutenant of Greater Manchester.
Two volunteers from the group will also attend a garden party at Buckingham Palace next year, along with other recipients of this year’s award.
Hyde Little Theatre’s Chair says it recognises the dedication and passion of the group’s volunteers, and the support of the community.
“We have been on a fantastic journey over the last few years, expanding the range of events and activities at Studio 9 to meet the needs of our local community,” said Vanessa Rothwell.
“We couldn’t have achieved this award without the hard work and dedication of our volunteers, but also the continued support from everyone who promotes and attends our events, purchases tickets for our productions, comes for lunch at Studio 9, and enjoys all that Hyde Little Theatre offers.
“They are all a part of this journey and achievement. We can’t wait to do even more in 2025. Thank you for your support.”
