Scouts enjoy fact-filled hike to Hartshead Pike

A GROUP of young people enjoyed a day of exploration and learning in the outdoors as they walked to an iconic Tameside landmark.

Members of 14th Ashton Scouts from Ashton Central Mosque laced up their boots recently to set off on an adventure to Hartshead Pike.

During the hike, the Cubs – aged between eight and 10-and-a-half years old – practised their navigation skills by noting down bearings and coordinates, while the Beavers – aged between six and eight – explored local wildlife and nature.

The group stopped to observe horses and cows, learning interesting animal facts, identifying ash trees and even picking blackberries along the way.

With plenty of conversation and laughter, they reached the summit of Hartshead Pike in no time.

Once at the top, the Scouts gathered to eat their lunches and listen to local history, as leaders shared fascinating facts about the hill, Ashton-under-Lyne and the wider Tameside area.

The youngsters enjoyed spotting landmarks like their own homes, schools and, of course, IKEA!

The day left everyone feeling proud of their community and eager for more outdoor adventures.

The 14th Ashton Scouts welcome boys and girls from ages four to 18, with sections for Squirrels, Cubs, Scouts and Explorers.

Adults can get involved too, with roles available for leaders, trustees and supporters.
