Ashton woman named Deputy Lieutenant of Greater Manchester

AN ASHTON-UNDER-LYNE woman has been elevated to the rank of Deputy Lieutenant of Greater Manchester for her community work.

Joanne Parry-Gee is one of six across the area to be handed the position.

And it is recognition of the 58-year-old’s commitment to the town, especially its children, young people and families.

Since leaving further education in 1984, Jo has followed her passion to improve outcomes for those experiencing challenges and marginalisation.

Following roles which culminated in developing and managing Sure Start Centres, she moved to the voluntary sector in 2011, taking in the position of chief executive of St Peter’s Partnerships in 2014.

After a time of uncertainty and instability, she restructured the organisation, tripling its workforce and reach, to develop a vital community hub.

Now known as LEAP Children, Families and Communities, the charity provides a range of accessible services and opportunities for local children and adults, which inspire learning, empowerment and participation.

Jo is also chair of governors at Ashton’s Holy Trinity Primary School, on Kenyon Street, and sits as a director on the Ashton Pioneer Homes Governance Board.

Her coveted title was confirmed by an announcement from Lord-Lieutenant of Greater Manchester, Diane Hawkins, on Thursday, October 10.

Also named are Professor Malcolm Colin Press CBE – vice chancellor of Manchester Metropolitan University, Emily-Jane Coffey, Rebecca Jane Tarran, Robert Topham Race and Zoe Brimelow.

The Lord-Lieutenant – who arranges visits by members of the Royal Family, presents medals and awards on behalf of the Monarch, participates in civic and voluntary activities, liaises with the Armed Forces and their association of cadets and is the Keeper of the Rolls – is supported by a Vice Lord-Lieutenant and Deputy Lieutenants.

Its deputies are appointed in recognition of their contribution to local, county or national life.

Each of the 10 Greater Manchester boroughs has one – of which Joanne is Tameside’s – and they work closely with local authorities and other organisations within theirs.

They also formally represent the Lord-Lieutenant at events where she is unavailable and can encourage and advise on nominations of people or groups and businesses for honours, a King’s Award for Voluntary Service and a King’s Award for Enterprise.

  1. Well done Joanne Perry you have earned you’re new appointment just from your proved history and success.
Do you fancy becoming head of our dippy Tameside councillors maybe next time ? it won’t be long before the government officers report tells Tameside residents they have failed us again.
