MPs welcome central Labour Party involvement at Tameside Council

TAMESIDE’S MPs believe it is time for the party to intervene in the mess engulfing the borough’s council.

Cllr Gerald Cooney’s resignation as leader, which following the decision by chief executive Sandra Stewart to step down, has left a yawning chasm at the very top.

Now Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner, Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds and Gorton and Denton’s Andrew Gwynne have said the central party’s decision to bring a campaign improvement board into Tameside Council, citing ‘unacceptable working practices’ and demanding a ‘culture change’ was needed to steer the authority through the current crisis.

In a joint statement, they said: “Tameside’s three MPs would like to thank Councillor Ged Cooney for his service.

“We welcome the intervention of the Labour Party to bring stability and focus at this difficult time.

“Our number one priority is to ensure Tameside Council delivers for all residents of Tameside, and particularly for vulnerable children.”

  1. There has been a gaping chasm at the top for many years… it was an improvement on Roy Oldham and the TEL developments debarcle… but that’s about it really!

  2. Can’t believe what a mess this council has become!!!
Unbelievable people still have any faith in them
Needless to say I’m done voting for them, never again!!
To absolutely disregard its constituents consistently
    Says it all really

  3. Finally something might be done to rid Tameside of the shambolic leadership and woeful organisation we have endured for too many years. Tamesiders deserve better and have done for so long.
The Labour Party in charge have been an absolute disgrace.
Whoever takes over can’t possibly be any worse

  4. I have lived in Tameside 40 years and over that length of time when I have spoken to residents regarding the council they without question always say we have always had a weak council and there are two many councillors and they are over
paid and lazy and this includes our council management
My conclusion the Tameside council needs a time and motion executive and an inspector of working practices and when a position becomes vacant a professional adviser to come in to check who is qualified to take on the position and not just give the position to a novice councillor. I was involved with the University and was surprised to be enlightened that the grants they get from the government the departments are instructed to go into the red and if any funds are left pass them to to be spent some where in the university or we will not get the full grant the following year.
This I believe is the common practice with all government grants and is still used with our public funds and I believe all councils follow the same easy money not worked for. = 22 billion pounds of debt we need to look at the wages we give to inexperienced government and local management council. An elected PM and his juniors should also be vetted to see if they have a balanced brain and aware of good standing effics and moral judgement so not to be tempted and embarrass the country who voted them in to represent us.
