Sparks Dramatic Society delivers an evening of musical magic

HYDE Festival Theatre was alive with energy as Sparks Dramatic Society hosted their spectacular ‘Evening at the Musicals.’

From the moment the curtain rose, the packed audience – including the Civic Mayor of Tameside, Cllr Betty Affleck, and her consort Declan – was treated to a whirlwind of performances drawn from some of Broadway and the West End’s most beloved shows.

With 26 songs performed by members in a variety of formats, from powerful solos to lively group numbers, showcasing both vocal and choreographic talent, there was something for all to enjoy.

Erin Bradbury and Alexa Mottershead

The versatility on display was impressive and the audience was fully engaged with each performance – including the avid fans of Joseph and his Technicolour Dreamcoat who thoroughly enjoyed the rendition of ‘Any Dream Will Do.’

One of the standout moments of the evening came in the form of a sizzling rendition of Chicago’s ‘Cell Block Tango.’ The cast’s fierce and confident delivery had the audience completely enthralled and the performance was met with rapturous applause.

Another notable mention must go to Erin Bradbury, whose versatility shone throughout the night.

Not only a commanding presence on stage, but her combined skill as both a singer and dancer marked her as a standout performer. Whether in a solo moment or leading a group, her talent was undeniable.

The emotional depth of the evening was perhaps best embodied by the youngest member of the troupe, Alexa Mottershead, who delivered a heartwarming performance of ‘Castle on a Cloud’ from Les Misérables.

Her delicate vocals and genuine vulnerability in this iconic number silenced the crowd – you could hear a pin drop. She is truly a star in the making and it will be exciting to watch her grow as a performer.

The repertoire was refreshingly varied, with nods to girl power in Six and infectious sing-alongs with Mamma Mia.

Each song was given its moment to shine, creating a diverse and engaging program for musical theatre lovers of all ages.

Sparks Dramatic Society has always prided itself on being an inclusive and diverse group, and this event was a clear testament to that ethos.

The combination of vocal talent, expert choreography and enthusiasm made for an enjoyable evening proving once again that local theatre can offer something truly special.

Bravo to all involved in this outstanding production!
