Stalybridge allotment keepers show off their finest

SOMETHING special has been growing at Stalybridge allotments – and its association showed off what is being produced.

Quantity was clear from the massive marrows, enormous onions and long leeks as those who tend to land at Mottram Road put on a display.

But quality was also high as a record number of entries were received for the various competitions judged at a fun day on Sunday, September 15 – the first since Covid-19 struck.

Mottram Road Allotment Association’s (MRAA) finest showed what they can do on the doorstep as fruit, veg and flowers were judged.

They also showed their skills with an array of jams, preserves, cakes and even gin and spirits made using local produce.

And just one look at the face of judge John Irwin after sampling one chilli jam told you it was very much job done!

Members also ran stalls selling various items, including bird feeders, as people’s creative side came out in a scarecrow competition.

Mark Stones, chair of the MRAA, was delighted as he said: “It was a very great success. After the Covid-19 lockdowns, no-one has been showing and I was very surprised at the amount of exhibits we had.

“It was the most ever, so I was really proud of that and the sub-committee who ran this show did a really great job.

“It showed the quality of items that are being produced right here in Stalybridge, on the doorstep. As I marked three years as chair, it was a very proud moment for myself.”
