Full investigation into Audenshaw derailment possible

A TRAIN derailment that saw a freight locomotive come off the tracks in Audenshaw may yet be subject of a full investigation.

People living near Sidmouth Street were left startled at the incident, which occurred close to homes.

Thankfully, no-one was seriously injured and no property was under threat after up to 10 carriages came off.

But the Rail Accident Investigation Branch has told The Correspondent it may yet launch a full probe into the events of Friday, September 6.

Carriages, which were carrying aggregates on the train that was heading to Manchester, are being removed before work begins on repairing the track between Denton and Ashton Moss.

Floodlights have also been brought on to the site so work can carry on in darkness. Investigations on the bridge over Sidmouth Street are also likely to take place.

A spokesperson for the Rail Accident Investigation Branch told The Correspondent: “We deployed a team of Inspectors to gather evidence following a freight train derailment in the Audenshaw area of Greater Manchester, near to Denton Junction.

“The team will undertake a preliminary examination and a decision on whether or not a full investigation will be launched will be taken in the coming days.”

Network Rail has also updated Audenshaw’s Councillors of what is happening in the area.

They said: “The team are working hard to get the carriages removed and start to fix any damage to the track.

“Several carriages have been removed already, and we are working to remove the remaining nine.

“This will involve emptying some of the cargo to make them lighter and easier to re-rail.

“To help in our work, we’re going to be putting up lights to properly illuminate the site. We apologise for any disruption this will cause our neighbours.

“We apologise also for any increased noise from the site.

“We hope to have all the carriages removed in the coming days and then start repairs to the track.”

  1. They are NOT CARRIAGES.They are freight WAGONS.Most people are probably led in to believing that this train was carrying passengers by using the word CARRIAGES.They are bogie hoppers capable of carrying around 70 tonnes of aggregates and were travelling on a Freight Only line.Just wanted to put the records straight for any of your confused readers.
