THE FOURTH annual Hyde Mela has placed the event firmly on the town’s calendar after a successful staging.
A brainchild of three prominent members of the Asian community, it aims to provide an annual occasion that everyone can enjoy.
And this year’s gathering at Hyde Park delivered as many of the attractions and entertainment that proved popular previously returned.
After organisers sought advice from Action Together, who recommended applying for National Lottery Community Fund support, money for the event this year and next – meaning it will continue for the foreseeable future – was secured.
More than 30 stalls selling a range of food, artisan items and charity groups showcasing what they do, provided attraction for mela goers.
Once again, it featured fairground rides, a large inflatable slide, classic cars, birds of prey, football games and remote-controlled tanks, as well as a full program of diverse entertainment on the park bandstand.
Entertainment included drummers, two indie bands, a soul and a bhangra singer, plus Bollywood dance workshop and dance groups.
The event was opened by Civic Mayor of Tameside, Councillor Betty Affleck, who was accompanied by her consort Declan Fitzpatrick.
Local MP Jonathan Reynolds also thanked those who had contributed to its organisation, which included the Mayor herself.
Hyde Mela was first held in 2021 and was organised at short notice, with some Covid-19 restrictions having to be observed, but still attracted 3,000 visitors.
In 2022, the sun shone brightly and lifting of restrictions saw the event expanding and 6,000 attendees.
2023 was blighted by heavy rain, which impacted on the number of visitors, down to just 1,500, putting the event’s future in jeopardy.
However, despite the threat of forecast rain, the event on Sunday, August 25 avoided the showers and was hailed a success by all involved.
It was also supported by local businesses, whose logos appeared on the advertising banners, and others who contributed raffle prizes, the money from which will contribute to future Hyde Melas, ensuring something the whole community can look forward to moving – according to the Hyde’s town motto – onward.
