The Correspondent also witnessed police knocking on the doors of neighbouring properties and fire staff posting leaflets through letterboxes.

When approached, a fire service representative insisted the presence was a ‘post-incident investigation.’

However, The Correspondent has learned police are working under the presumption it was started deliberately.

A spokesperson for then Greater Manchester force said: “At about 3.25am on Wednesday, August 21, we were called to reports of a fire at a property on Huddersfield Road in Stalybridge.

“Officers attended along with colleagues from the Fire Service and the fire was extinguished. Thankfully, no injuries have been reported.
