Tameside village getting ready for annual tradition

RESIDENTS of a Hyde village are being invited to craft and display a scarecrow of their choice in their front garden or window.

That’s because the Gee Cross Scarecrow Festival is returning this year.

As well as creating a scarecrow trail for the community to enjoy, there will be a friendly competition with prizes for the top three entries – as chosen by judges.

The festival is being supported by Hyde Werneth councillors Phil Chadwick and Chris Halligan, as well as local Neighbourhood Watch groups.

The Olympics themed scarecrow was stolen from Gee Cross

Scarecrows can be any form or size, use a variety of materials and don’t have to be a specific theme.

They must be prominently displayed from 10am on Saturday, September 14th, until 5pm on Sunday, September 15th – the period when judging will take place.

To take part, register your intention by sending an email to gxscarecrowfestival@gmail.com before midnight on Friday, August 30th – including your name and address.

The annual festival has always been well supported and produced some spectacular creations over the years – from Paddington and pirates, mermaids and Minions to Boris Johnson on a zip wire!

Cllrs Chadwick and Halligan said: “We eagerly anticipate your participation and look forward to witnessing the remarkable scarecrows that will grace our community.

“We appreciate the support of the local Neighbourhood Watch groups for supporting this event. We hope you can join us for this enjoyable activity.”

More details about prizes, judges and the trail will be confirmed in due course.
