‘Suspicious item’ found on Stalybridge footpath

POLICE were summoned to a footpath in Stalybridge after remains were discovered by a member of the public.

Officers were called to a public footpath in the vicinity of Arlies Lane and the top of Ridge Hill Lane on Wednesday afternoon (July 17).

A local resident told The Correspondent that they had found the remains in the overgrowth, describing them as being in the ‘pulping’ stage and covered in maggots, but they were unsure if they were human or not.

The footpath was closed for a period as crime scene investigators were called to the scene to carry out forensic examinations.

But Greater Manchester Police have now confirmed that the remains were in fact that of an animal.

A spokesperson for the force told the Correspondent: “At around 2.30pm on Wednesday (July 17 2024), we were called to reports of a suspicious item being found on a public footpath on Arlies Lane, Stalybridge.

“Officers attended and located remains at the scene, and enquiries revealed the remains belonged to an animal.”

  1. I particularly loved the stupidity and lack of public safety demonstrated by the police van parking on the bow of the hill causing an obstruction to any vehicle needing to pass from either direction of the blind hill.
