IF you’ve never experienced the grace and beauty of ballet before, Tameside Libraries invites you to immerse yourself in a captivating production.
On Monday, June 17 at 3 pm, Droylsden Library will showcase Black British Ballet’s performance of “Island Movements.”
This short story recounts the journey of those who arrived in Britain from the West Indies aboard the Empire Windrush in 1948.
Starting with a young Caribbean soldier serving in Britain during World War II, the story unfolds, tracing his family’s life in the UK up to the present day. “Island Movements” delves into the profound impact of the Windrush generation’s experiences on their families, communities, and society at large.
Following the show, there will be a question-and-answer session with the talented dancers and creators.
Tickets for this performance are free but must be reserved in advance. Call 0161 342 4000 or visit tamesidelibraries.eventbrite.co.uk.
Cllr Sangita Patel, Tameside Council’s assistant executive member for culture, heritage, participation and sport, said, “The narrative of the Windrush generation is inherently moving, and there’s no better medium to convey it than through ballet. This rendition of ‘Island Movements’ offers a rare opportunity to witness outstanding ballet in Tameside, completely free of charge. Whether you’re new to ballet or a seasoned enthusiast, this performance is not to be missed.”
“Island Movements” is a collaborative effort between Black British Ballet, Tameside Libraries, the Department for Levelling Up and Communities, and Near Neighbours (Bringing People Together). Visit blackbritishballet.com for more information.
