TAMESIDE Council has given a company with local links the job of building the controversial new canopy that will go over much of Ashton-under-Lyne’s market square.
As part of the near £20 million award of Government Levelling Up Funding, the structure will be put in place over the outdoor ground.
And in the next stage of putting the plan into action, The Casey Group has landed the near £4.5 million contract to erect it.

After drawing up plans of the new market, which must be completed by March 31, 2025, a tendering process to carry out construction was carried out.
And Casey, which is based in Rochdale but has many links to Stalybridge, won the £4,452,000 deal.
In an executive decision, taken by director of place Julian Jackson, director of resources Ashley Hughes and assistant legal director Linda Comstive, it states: “The proposed contract award is to a maximum value of £4.452 million, which is earmarked within the market ground and public realm Improvements budget of £11.2 million.
“It is essential that costs are managed appropriately to ensure the overall scheme remains within budget.
“The council has undertaken a procurement exercise utilising an open tender process and has selected The Casey Group Ltd as the preferred contractor to manufacture and install the new canopy provision and associated public realm works as part of the redevelopment of Ashton Market Square.
“The council is currently working to procure the materials for the remaining public realm works and enter contract with its engineering service to deliver this element of the scheme.”
As well as the £19,780,000 of Levelling Up Funding, which will go towards several schemes in Ashton, Tameside Council will also contribute a further £4,251,000.
Documents also state the full remediation of the former bus station will cost £5,270,000.
Another 29 million into ashton!!!! Seriously this council is a disgrace
