Scouts come together to honour St George’s Day

MORE than 100 young Scouts came together to help celebrate St George’s Day in Ashton-under-Lyne.

Saint George is the patron saint of Scouts and nine groups from Ashton and Droylsden marked the patriotic occasion by taking part in the annual parade.

With Ashton-under-Lyne Brass Band playing along the route, it started in the town centre, then passed the market before going on to Albion Church for a special service.

The service was conducted by Vicar Jean Combs and 339th Droylsden Scout Group, led by Group Scout Leader Freya Jones, in which all North Tameside Squirrels, Beavers, Cubs, Scouts, Explorers and Leaders renewed their promises.

Andy Morton, the District Commissioner, also presented a host of awards to Scouts and Leaders for their achievements.

The Civic Mayor of Tameside, Councillor Tafheen Sharif, said she enjoyed the parade and talking to Scouts, as well as seeing the new 14th Ashton Scout Group based at Ashton Central Mosque.

Alan Fish, the District Chair, thanked Tameside Council for their support.
