Stalybridge Show to help raise carnival funds

A FUN-FILLED afternoon is planned for this year’s Stalybridge Show in Cheetham Park.

It’s being organised by Stalybridge Festival Committee, with arrangements being finalised for the event on Sunday, May 5.

Once again, the five-metre Maypole will be the focal point of the performance area in the park with Sarah England’s Dance Academy choreographing several dances for the day.

Organising Secretary Ian Cochrane is confident it will be a memorable experience for those in attendance.

He said: “A fun-packed afternoon of activities is planned for the Spring Show, including a large family fun fair, many craft and community stalls, a Fun Dog Show and dog agility demonstrations.

“This year members of Dukinfield & Stalybridge Rotary Club will also be performing a short dance around the Maypole with its members busy practising their routine under the guidance of Sarah England.”

The Spring Show helps to raise funds for the annual Stalybridge Carnival, which will return for the 48th year on Sunday, June 23.

Following the parade through the town centre, one of the carnival’s key moments is the crowning of the Stalybridge Carnival Queen.

The Festival Committee is looking for applications for the following categories: Petal (aged three to five years old), Rosebud (aged five to eight years old), Princess (aged eight to 10 years old), Junior Queen (aged 10 to 14 years old) and Queen (aged 14 years old and over).

Joyce Hobson, President of Stalybridge Festival Committee, said: “Our Carnival Queens take a prominent position in the parade as it winds its way around the town centre and are seen by over 5,000 visitors lining the route as well as being formally crowned in Cheetham Park after the parade.

“This year, we are very keen to seek nominations for each of the Carnival Queen categories, particularly as this has been seen as being an important element of the carnival.”

The deadline for applications is Friday, April 5. More information is available by contacting Joyce on 0161 303 7087.
