WHATEVER happens between now and the end of the football season, Denton Town will be safe in the knowledge it will not be trophyless after a dramatic turnaround.
When the clock ticked to 90 minutes of the Manchester FA Saturday Challenge Trophy final, hope started to fade as they trailed to Chadderton Reserves.
But goals in the 96th and 100th minutes saw the silverware head towards Whittles Park amid jubilant scenes.
And Josh Rushby was the hero as he ended up with a hat-trick on the big night at Hyde United’s Project Solar Stadium.
His first came at the second attempt after his first effort was blocked – but his best was yet to come.
Almost six minutes into stoppage time, Rushby was fouled in the penalty area and held his nerve to slot home the resulting spot kick.
Then almost at the moment the clock reached 100 minutes, Rushby’s looping header dropped into the net, sparking wild celebrations from the Denton Town fans in the stands.
Joyous staff at Denton Town, who play in the Cheshire League, celebrated gleefully at the turnround.
And they thanked everyone who cheered them to glory, saying: “Well done to everyone who is involved – from the backroom staff to the field, we’re proud of you all.
“Also, a big thank you to all our sponsors as without you all we wouldn’t be where we are now.
“Our last thanks are to all the fans, that night was electric! From the committee to the staff, we want to say a massive thank you for supporting such a great club.”
