Greggs to open store at Mottram petrol station

BAKERY chain Greggs is to place an outlet at a petrol station situated on one of Tameside’s busiest roads.

The Motor Fuel Group facility, trading as a Shell garage on Hyde Road, close to the end of the M67 motorway, will have one placed at the site.

It is one of only two new units in the Greater Manchester area to be included in a list of up to 160 after a record number of openings in 2023, which helped revenues soar by almost a fifth to £1.8 billion.

And the firm has wasted little time in having the facility brought in.

2023 saw Greggs grow its business by a total of 145 new UK stores and the trial of 24-hour drive-through locations.

The company told investors it would ‘invest further in growing both our shop estate and supply chain capacity’, with expectations of ‘between 140 and 160 net new shops in 2024.’

And it seems Mottram will be one of them.

Roisin Currie, chief executive of Greggs, said: “2023 was a year of further progress by Greggs.7

“I am proud of our teams, who did a fantastic job serving more customers as we continue to grow our shop estate and offer greater availability through digital channels and extended trading hours.

“We enter 2024 with plans to continue to invest in our shops and expand supply chain capacity to deliver the growth strategy, supported by our strong balance sheet.

“Our value-for-money offer, and the quality of our freshly prepared food and drink continue to evolve and position us well for further progress in the year ahead.”

MFG runs both the BP and Shell garages on Hyde Road in Mottram and has Greggs’ outlets at more than 43 locations around the country.

And it comes as it looks to revamp its stations.

It said: “MFG continues its policy of redeveloping stations to improve the overall customer experience.

“In supporting this, the group continues to open new food to go outlets across a range of well-known brands.”
