Tameside Rotary Santa float gives boost to local causes

SANTA Claus bringing joy to families across Tameside has helped to raise thousands of pounds for good local causes.

The generosity of folk through donations when Tameside Rotary’s Santa float toured the borough has raised over £8,000.

Every penny will be put back into the local community throughout 2024.

Santa was very busy in the run-up to Christmas, covering approximately 60 miles over two weeks as he made his way through the streets and even stopped at a number of supermarkets.

Whilst visiting Ashton town centre, a touch of glamour was added when Santa was joined by Miss United Kingdom Endeavour 2023/24.

He was accompanied on his journeys by his faithful elves – all of which were volunteers, including local councillors, representatives from local charity The Believe and Achieve Trust, and Ashton United in the Community.

Steve Knowles, Tameside Rotary’s president, has estimated that over 700 volunteer hours were given to support the Christmas collection.

He added: “We could not run this fantastic fundraiser without the amazing commitment, enthusiasm and stamina shown by the volunteers and the support of key organisations including Tameside Council, LC Vehicle Hire and local media outlets who promote our fundraising activities.

“Whilst our Santa float is a major contributor to our fundraising calendar, equally significant is the happiness it brings to many families we meet each year.

“This year, the £8,000 raised across the 14 locations we attended has exceeded our expectations during a cost-of-living crisis and we are so grateful to the people of Tameside for their ongoing support.”

Tameside Rotary has supported around 50 community groups and charities over the last 12 months and has plenty planned for the year ahead. Find out more or get involved by visiting www.tamesiderotaryclub.com
