EXTENSIVE repairs are underway following a major burst in Stalybridge.
High Street is now closed to all traffic while the road is dug up to assess the damage caused by a burst water main.
People woke up to find they were without water or with very low pressure this morning (December 18) because of the incident on Caroline Street with water seen ‘gushing’ out of a traffic island.

Residents in Dukinfield, Mottram Road, Castle Hall and the Copley area of Stalybridge were without water and local schools closed.
The High Street was heavily flooded with one reader saying it was like ‘driving through a river’. One resident has reported significant flooding to their cellar.
United Utilities are at the scene and have stated:
“A burst was spotted and reported to us on the junction of Caroline Street and we can confirm this to be the cause of no water or low pressure in your area.
Parts of our network sit underground, and we have to dig down to gain access to them. This can cause hazards in the area for both our customers and workers, so we need to put traffic management in place before we can get started.
So that we can keep your supply on whilst we complete the repair, we’ve put some temporary measures in place. We’ll be providing water to you from a different area and our water tankers will be pumping additional supply into the network. This may mean your water pressure is lower than normal or you may notice fluctuations during peak times.
We’re sorry for any inconvenience this is causing.”
