A KIND-HEARTED conservative club in Tameside is celebrating after being recognised with a national award.

Waterloo and Taunton Conservative Club in Ashton-under-Lyne has won ‘Charity Club of the Year’ for 2023 at the Club Mirror Awards.

The awards, owned and run by Club Mirror magazine, have been running since 1996 and are the only ceremony which serve the club sector.

Established in 1891, Waterloo and Taunton Conservative is a private members club which raises thousands of pounds every year for local and national charities – which have included Willow Wood Hospice, Motor Neurone Disease, Parkinsons UK and others.

Leon Tamcken, the club’s chairman, said: “It’s such an honour for us to be recognised at a national level and is testament to the fundraising efforts throughout the year by our members.”

The award was presented by BBC and ITV sports broadcaster John Inverdale at the Athena in Leicester.

Clubs from all over the country were in attendance at the star-studded night, which also included a special guest appearance by former England goalkeeper Peter Shilton.
