Prestigious award for Tameside charity driven by volunteers

A TAMESIDE charity which aspires to build happy and positive futures for children and their families has received the highest accolade that a voluntary organisation can.

The LEAP Children & Families Centre, based in Ashton-under-Lyne, has received a King’s Award for Voluntary Service – which is the equivalent to an MBE for voluntary groups and is awarded for life.

The organisation said it was “absolutely delighted and honoured” to be recognised.

They added in a statement: “Thank you to everyone who has made our work possible but especially our wonderful volunteers for being the difference that makes a difference.”

The charity delivers a range of inspiring services for children and adults, which are designed to tackle inequalities and bring about positive change.

LEAP currently has over 30 active volunteers, who are key to the success of its projects. They support a wide range of activities, including play and early learning, family support, craft sessions and green wellbeing projects, alongside admin and customer care provision, at the centre on Clyde Street.

Chief Officer Jo Parry-Gee commented: “We are very, very lucky to work with such amazing volunteers, who are committed to making a difference for others through their work at LEAP. Our annual Volunteer Celebration will be super special this year, having been awarded this fantastic accolade.”

LEAP were chosen because they have “demonstrated exceptional work at grassroots level, providing invaluable support to their community”.

They are one of 262 voluntary groups across the UK who received the award, which seeks to recognise volunteer-driven groups that make an outstanding impact in their local community.

The award was originally established in 2002 to celebrate Queen Elizabeth’s Golden Jubilee and King Charles wanted to continue the award, so this year marks the first King’s Award for Voluntary Service – which was announced as he celebrated his 75th birthday.

LEAP will be presented with a crystal award and a certificate bearing His Majesty’s signature by the Lord Lieutenant at a locally arranged event. They will also receive two invitations to attend a Royal Garden Party.
