Old Denton Baths proposal sparks size concern

A HOUSING company will be told to scale back it plans to redevelop the site of a town’s former swimming baths.

Irwell Valley Homes wants to build 46 one and two-bedroomed apartments on what was once Denton’s pool.

But the size of the scheme, which is not even subject of a formal planning proposal, has already caused concerns for residents and politicians.

Especially because the Victoria Street site overlooks Victoria Park and will dwarf the war memorial and even the town hall with its four-storey build.

Parking in what is already a tightly-packed area is also an issue.

The old Denton Baths building was demolished in 2020 after the facility moved to the Wellness Centre, on Lance Corporal Andrew Breeze Way.

Salford-based Irwell Valley is no stranger to Tameside and Denton.

It was behind a project on Fairfield Road and Canalside in Droylsden and a £2.8 million development in nearby Haughton Green.

But the scale of what they want to do has not gone down well with Denton North East Councillor Allison Gwynne and the town’s MP, husband Andrew.

Allison said: “The proposed building is four storeys high, which I’m concerned is far too high for this side street location and will massively overshadow the park.

“As it stands – unless there’s a significant reduction in building height – I will be objecting.”

Andrew added: “This is way too big for this site!”

Irwell Valley Homes, which markets its properties for prices below the average market rent, held a public consultation event before submitting its application to Tameside Council.

  1. Irwell Valley are rogue landlords! Properties in Haughton Green are rotten with mould. If someone complains they are told ‘if you don’t like it then leave!’

  2. interesting …. and with a balcony which is most important element. Flats in Haughton Green shouldve had balconies but good ole TMBC! interested
