A NEW martial arts studio has strengthened its links with its community by opening its doors.
Marksman, on Berkeley Street in Ashton – close to the Ikea superstore, does not lack experience or qualifications as owner Mark Wood holds an eighth Dan in the Japanese art of Ju-Jitsu.
It also has a personal connection as he is Tameside born and bred.
At Marksman Martial Arts, Mark teaches Jujutsu and kickboxing to adults and children, as well as special sessions in the traditional Japanese weapons including the Japanese sword (Batto or Iaido) and Okinawan weapons (Kobudo).
One of the assistant instructors, Jordan Mitchell, recently returned from training in Japan where he is soon to return for a grading in the Japanese sword.
There are also Karate classes at the centre taught by sixth Dan Simon Keegan, who lives in Hyde, and who is the head of the Shobukan Karate Organisation and chief instructor of the Bushinkai Academy.
He is recognised as a teacher of the style in Okinawa and Japan.
Mark said: “Marksman is a martial arts centre like no other.
“It’s a traditional Dojo where students of all ages can learn the ways of Karate, Ju-jitsu and classical weapons in a safe professional environment.
“We have a team of male and female instructors who are there to help coach students whether they are a complete beginner or already experienced in the martial arts.
“We are proud to open this new centre in Ashton as I’ve taught in Tameside for many years and we have always been very much a part of the community.”
The Marksman Dojo is fully equipped and fully matted for safety and has a comfortable reception area where parents are welcome to watch their children train.
