Hyde United feeling top after Stafford win

ASK ANYONE associated with Hyde United how they are feeling and you are likely to get the same answer from everyone – top.

For the Tigers are flying high in the Northern Premier League after a 1-0 win over Stafford Rangers sent them to the summit.

Substitute Edy Maieco’s goal proved the difference as the 4G pitch at Project Solar meant Nick Spooner’s side took advantage of other matches being postponed.

Now the task is to stay there for the remainder of the Premier Division campaign.

Spooner told the club after a huge crowd of 988 turned up: “It’s a great result and I’m pleased in a way as they sat off us, we had to break them down.

“We took control of the game in the second half and started being more positive and getting players forward.

“Then we scored an excellent goal. Edy’s a very talented [layers, he’s got great feet and he made a point, so it’s another selection headache for me.

“Now we’ll be like the old Arsenal now – 1-0 will do me!

“And points on the board are better than games in hand. Teams have to play each other now and I don’t want a backlog of fixtures and you’re paying two or three games a week.

“I’d rather have the points.”

And after a week that saw them issue an appeal for £25,000 to help them through the season, Stalybridge Celtic did plenty of talking on the pitch with a 4-0 win at Nantwich Town.

Chris Dagnall made it three goals in four games while Kyle Harrison and Theo Bailey-Jones added to Djavan Pedro’s debut strike.

In rugby union, Aldwinians’ First XV won of only two matches in Counties One Lancashire and Cheshire to survive the weather.

The Audenshaw Park side won 20-7 at Southport, making it four victories from their last five games.
