Libraries to provide Warm Welcomes

TAMESIDE’S libraries are to double up as Warm Welcome Hubs as the cost of living crisis leaves several people with a ‘heat or eat’ choice.

Whenever the buildings are staffed, residents can enjoy them as a comfortable and safe space, which offers free hot drinks.

Much of this winter may have been warmer than the average but the rising fuel bills, as well as demand for utilities, means the issue is just as big.

The Hubs will also enable people to access other services they may need as the mental strain of making sure everything can be paid for is taking its toll on many in the community.

Eight libraries across Tameside which provide soft seating, free Wi-Fi, and computer facilities where residents can spend their time reading or relaxing are being used.

Friendly and helpful library staff can also provide people with a range of advice and signpost to local support which available.

Tameside Council’s executive member for population health and wellbeing, Cllr Eleanor Wills, said: ‘’Our libraries are the perfect place to enjoy a brew this winter.

“All residents are welcome to use our libraries during staffed hours to stay warm and to keep electricity bills down at home.

“Our helpful staff can also signpost you to local support and advice available if you are struggling with bills, housing, mental health and more.

“Please do not struggle alone, access the support services that are available to you.”
