Woman arrested after car ploughs into Ashton shop

A WOMAN has been arrested on suspicion of drink driving after a car ploughed into the front of an Ashton shop.

The vehicle became embedded in Alan Fish Ltd, on Canterbury Street, on Thursday, January 5 – the second such incident in four months.

Now Greater Manchester Police is weighing up whether to charge the woman, who managed to free herself.

The damage to the building on Canterbury Street in Ashton

Mr Fish, who was in the shop five minutes before the incident, which happened about 6.45pm, heard what happened and is left in disbelief.

He has boarded up the premises, which he has had for 46 years, after a similar thing happened in September.

Now police officers are deciding whether to charge the woman, who was taken into custody.

A GMP spokesman said: “At 6:45pm on Thursday, January 5, officers attended a road traffic collision on Canterbury Street in Ashton-Under-Lyne.

“A car collided with a building causing part of the building to collapse.

“One woman has been arrested on suspicion of drink driving and has been taken into police custody as enquiries continue.”

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) added: “At around 6.45pm on Thursday 5 January, fire crews were called to reports of a road traffic collision on Canterbury Street, Ashton.

Emergency services at the scene

“Two fire engines from Ashton and Stalybridge stations, as well as the technical rescue unit from Ashton, quickly attended the scene. The incident involved a car colliding with a house causing significant structural damage.

“The driver had freed herself from the car prior to crews’ arrival and is being treated at the scene by North West Ambulance Service (NWAS). No other casualties have been reported.”
