DAVID Rowles pinpointed the pivotal shot which won him and playing partner Laraine Gordon the Myers Mixed, a major at Denton Golf Club.
The pair returned a five-under-par nett 66 which was one shot clear of runners-up Ian Lakin and Lana Mulhearn.
“It came on the 17th when I chipped in from about 20 yards for a birdie three. That probably won it for us,” explained David, 61, an engineer who plays off a handicap of eight.
David, who lives on the Denton/Reddish border, is no stranger to success in the Myers Mixed as this was his third triumph, all with different women members.
“It is a random draw, so I have had a different lady partner each time,” he said.
“Greensome is a difficult format playing alternate shots, but we played very well together.”
David, a former captain and president of the club, has been a member at Denton for 29 years and has won a total of seven majors in that time.
Laraine is also no stranger to success as she is also a previous winner of the Myers Mixed in 2008, one of six board competitions she has landed since becoming a member of 2001.
The 72-year-old from Audenshaw described the latest victory as being “lucky on the day” as she and David only won by one shot.
Laraine, whose handicap has crept up to 39, added she took up the sport quite late to annoy her golf-playing husband Thomas.
• CHARLES Smith was the winner of the Veterans Cup at Denton Golf Club after returning a nett 68.
A subsidiary medal, for the younger club members, saw Mark Riding take top spot with nett 64 from Nicholas Jones (65) and John Stapleton (67).
Invitation Day saw former Premier League footballer Darren Beckford and Rick Palmer emerge the victors with 43 points in the pairs Stableford.
