Garden project makes a difference

HATTERSLEY Community Big Garden project has certainly made a difference for the area – and they were proud finalists in a regional award to prove it.

The project was one of four shortlisted in BBC Radio Manchester’s ‘Make a Difference’ awards in the environmental category.

Abraham Moss Warriors were named the winners at a ceremony at the Victoria Warehouse, Old Trafford, with Hattersley Community Big Garden Project, Chris and Vicki Kennedy and Milla McClellan coming in as runners-up.

Chris Burns, from the BBC, said: “We are delighted to announce the winners of these wonderful awards, which recognise those individuals who have gone above and beyond what most of us expect people to do. It’s a way to showcase the best people.”

BBC reporter Lydia Flavell visited the garden earlier in the summer to interview Dez Claire and some of his team of volunteers and film a video for the BBC website.

The community project was launched in 2019 to transform the rundown site on Union Close into a safe space for people to enjoy gardening, woodwork and socialising.

There is also an orchard and poultry, and the volunteers harvest rainwater so they don’t need to use a tap, and there are no chemicals on site.
