Sponsored walk in memory of Hyde cricketer Danny Woods

FAMILY and friends of the late Hyde cricketer Danny Woods completed a four-day sponsored walk in his memory.

Led by his widow Heather, the group walked the 70 miles between Hyde Cricket Club and York Cricket Club, the two clubs where he enjoyed tremendous success.

And the walk has raised more than £5,600 – the group set an initial £2,000 target – for the Magnolia Centre which treats cancer patients at York Hospital.

The walk followed a previous event ‘Run for Dan’ in 2020 when family and friends from all over the world took part in individual runs during lockdown which raised more than £20,000 for the Magnolia Centre which cared for Danny who died in March 2020 aged only 32.

The walkers set out from Hyde to Marsden on Wednesday, August 24 then on to Leeds the following day, Tadcaster the day after and to York CC on Saturday, arriving during the match.

Heather was one of six to complete the entire walk while others joined them for various legs of the journey.

Among those setting off from Hyde was Lee Dixon, a former Hyde and Cheshire team-mate who travelled from his home in Chester to walk for one hour before returning to work.

Danny, a left-arm spin bowler, arrived at Hyde in his teens having previously played for Cheadle Hulme and Bowdon.

He went on to become one of the finest bowlers in Cheshire County Cricket Club’s history, twice helping them win the Minor Counties Championship.

Danny, who also captained Cheshire, made his country debut in 2006 and by the time he retired from county duty in 2018 had claimed 261 wickets, including 21 five-wicket hauls. in 53 matches.

The son of Cumberland cricketing legend Malcolm, Danny later played for York after completing his university studies and becoming a PE teacher in York which became home.

But he returned for a second spell at Hyde as playing for a Cheshire club was a requirement for playing for the county.
