Celtic name press box after ‘The Voice’ Richard Tipping

RICHARD Tipping’s name will live on at Stalybridge Celtic following the matchday public address announcer’s untimely death aged 57.

Celtic officials have renamed the press box after Richard who was known as ‘The Voice’ at Bower Fold for the last 20 years.

It will be known as The Richard Tipping Press Box and, to maintain the family’s link, son Chris has become the club’s new PA announcer.

Richard Tipping

Richard, who died having been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in February, was named Celtic’s clubman of the year for the 2021-22 season at the annual presentations.

Chairman Rob Gorski paid tribute to Richard’s dedication and service, saying: “He was always smiling, positive and pleasant, and he has been taken from us far too early.

“He was our matchday announcer for 20 years, even when working in London during the week, and was an outstanding Celtic stalwart.

“Richard oozed class, style and humility and he will be terribly missed by all who knew him.”

Celtic wore black armbands for the season’s opening game at South Shields and one minute’s silence was observed before the season’s first home league match against Warrington Town.

Richard, who worked in children’s services for local authorities in different parts of the country, was also a DJ.

He lived in Denton and answered an advertisement when Celtic were looking for a PA announcer, and the rest was history.

And Chris became a fan when he started going to games with his father.

Richard leaves wife Clare, sons Chris, Daniel and James and daughter Lucy.
