Round of a lifetime wins Andy President’s Day

ANDY Angelone shot his best-ever round of golf to win President’s Day at Stamford.

The 33-year-old from Heyrod scored a remarkable eight-under-par nett 62 from his 10 handicap.

“For somebody with a handicap of 10 plus to shoot a two-over-par gross 72 in unusual and pretty special,” he said.

It came as a surprise to Andy who runs his own smoke and natural ventilation systems company.

“I had been playing okay, but never felt I would cause serious damage to the leaderboard,” he explained.

Andy added the first four holes are difficult before the course opens up.

He said: “It is about trying to keep the shots down on those first four holes and I was lucky to get a birdie three at the first.

“I hit my second shot from about 160 yards to one foot and then thought it could be my day.”

Andy said it might have been an even lower score as he bogeyed 14, 15 and 16, but managed to hold it together to win by three shots.

This was Andy’s fifth major in the seven years he has been a member at Stamford, but the first President’s Day.

And he added it was a special victory as it was through club president John Sharples he took up golf.

Andy explained: “It was my friend Steve Segar who got me into golf.

“We played crib, darts and dominoes at Carrbrook Institute where I was introduced to John who was a golfer at Stamford.

“It was through meeting John I took up golf and it therefore meant more to win the competition in the year when he is club president.”

Andy’s handicap has been reduced to eight and achieving single figures for the first time was also something to celebrate.

Runner-up was David Mulvey (83-18-65) on the card from third-placed Kevin Barber (75-10-65), Steven Bardsley (85-20-65) and Brett Worrall (74-9-65).

• Winner of the women’s August monthly medal was Lesley Green (91-27-64) from Joanne Akers (76-11-65) and Judith Whitehead (102-29-73).
